Pinterest

Have you all checked out pinterest yet?

I've passed quite a number of restful and happy hours staring at beautiful images and creating my own form of digital inspiration boards since I discovered it.

A friend asked if it was just one more thing to keep up with?  For me, the answer is no.  It's a chance to spend however long I choose to allot to visual inspiration, and then set it aside.

Staring at all the visuals on Sunday led to words flowing as I wrote and journaled.

It's been soul-feeding for me, these last number of days, to digitally collect beauty and inspiration.

Below are a number of the images I've pinned for later enjoyment.

Dream House

I came across this image tonight on pinterest.  I think this is going to be the place I picture in my mind from now on, when I'm picturing the perfect safe and quiet place to escape to.  And of course, it's surrounded by palm trees.

Cuddling a Baby

My dear friends A and B welcomed their daughter (Baby N) to the world early in January, and yesterday I finally managed to spend some time with A and get to meet N.

She's adorable!  She has her momma's latina head of lots of dark hair, and olive complexion, and her daddy's blue eyes, which make for a surprising and striking combination.  I think this little one is going to be a knock-out when she gets older!

A and I spent several hours visiting, catching up and chatting about how the last time I saw her, mommy-hood hadn't arrived and now, now she's a mommy!  We talked about everything and anything, and interspersed it with cuddling N, and cooking (A is Colombian and taught me how to make a sort of corn cake called arepas that's a traditional Colombian dish).

So, this is me, cuddling N.

High Tea and Hotsprings

I thought I'd share a few photos of the time I spent with one of "my people" the other day.

We had two very specific things on our agenda, and everything else we fit was just a bonus.

We were going to have afternoon high tea at the Banff Springs Hotel, and we were going to visit the Banff Hot Springs.

The photos I have are all from high tea.  We didn't take any photos at the Hot Springs, because, well, why risk a very nice camera falling into the water for shots of my blindingly white skin that no one should have to see anyway!

This is us, enjoying our tea service.

One of the two varieties of tea we sampled.  I think this one was an apple spice tea.

The tea service.  It also included a cup of fresh fruit, and a fabulous scone.

The view out the window from where we sat to enjoy tea. Not bad, huh?

Because no trip together to Banff would be complete without a bit of a photo shoot.

Have I mentioned how much I love the mountains that I live near?

This is the Banff Springs Hotel where we had tea, from across the valley.

Daily 5 - Year 2, Day 183

Today's Daily 5:
  1. Sleeping in a bit (sleep has been more of a challenge again lately, so the days when I can greet the day slowly and a bit later are a blessing)
  2. Doing admin work in my pajamas in bed
  3. wearing a cute hat
  4. Needing to wear less layers of clothing just for the day (thanks for coming, Chinook!)
  5. waiting for the bus in the sun
  6. a great home-made salad with chicken and blue cheese and peppers and almonds and sunflower seeds among other things
  7. a good customer service experience (Disney Movie Club - still trying to sort something out with them regarding a fraudulent charge made to my credit card.  It's hard to get through all the computer prompts to get to talk to a human, but once I did, she was really lovely.)
  8. curly hair day
  9. Vietnamese food at school
  10. reading on the bus
  11. getting home before dark - the days are finally getting a bit longer!
  12. another friend facebooked me a palm tree photo.  (I think I'm going to start printing them all out and come up with a fun way to add text with their locations and then create a palm tree collage for my wall or something!)
  13. wearing my California scarf.  (Ironically, given where I bought it, it's my coziest and warmest scarf!)
  14. finished up my Greek assignments for the week, now I just have to review for the quiz on Friday
  15. sweetly scented candles in my bedroom
Oh, and as a bonus, here's a couple photos of me today, since I was wearing that cute hat and had curly hair and was wearing the California scarf and all.

Reverb 10: Day 25 - Photo

Today's Reverb 10 Prompt:

December 25 – Photo – a present to yourself

Sift through all the photos of you from the past year. Choose one that best captures you; either who you are, or who you strive to be. Find the shot of you that is worth a thousand words. Share the image, who shot it, where, and what it best reveals about you.

(Author: Tracey Clark)

I spent a few minutes scrolling through photos from the last year and realized that this was definitely a year where I spent a lot more time behind the camera than in front of it.  Since I find photography therapeutic, that's not really all that surprising, but it does make it interesting to try to find an image that best captures me from within the past year.

I narrowed it down to these three images.

A dear friend who I met in person because of this blog took the first shot.  It's taken at the beach at Coronado, and I love the smile that I'm wearing.  It's a smile that reflects the fact that I was resting, that this trip was an escape, to find joy and to pray.  I love the ocean and being near the ocean on a sunny day in early fall was just about perfect.  I also love that I'm wearing a scarf in this photo.  I wear them most days, and almost all of my scarves have a meaning or a place attached to them.  That particular scarf was a gift for my 27th birthday, and was purchased in Germany and mailed to me from the Czech Republic by my dear friend and former roommate, L.

The second photo was a self-portrait, taken in either Bragg Creek or Kananaskis, on a late fall day.  I was out hiking with my mom and her cousin, and I was happy.  I love being in the mountains, and as I recall, that day was particularly lovely.

The third portrait is also from California, and was taken by a mutual friend of myself and the other LP/CA, the friend I flew to California to meet.  I love that this photo shows a friendship that has been full of laughter, and that it showcases some very happy memories.  That particular day we attended a Moroccan Tea, and that tea is one of my favorite memories from that trip.

New Recipe Project: Update

One of my goals for this year was to cook at least two new recipes a month.

These are the latest results:

The second recipe of the month for February was Chocolate Chip Pecan Blondies

The first recipe for the month of March was Arroz con Pollo with Apple

I'm still really pleased with this goal.  The food I've made so far has all been quite tasty, and I'm getting the chance to expand my recipe repertoire and my cooking skills.  Plus, I'm having the chance to feed lots of other people.

After I moved into Grandma's and cooking became a bit more of a challenge, I was wondering if this goal would have to die only two months in.  Instead, I got a little bit creative, phoned my mom, and asked if she'd be interested in me cooking dinner at their place twice a month.  Since both of my parents work from home and tend to be fairly busy, and mom has never particularly loved to cook (though let me add that she is a good cook) she jumped at the opportunity, and even volunteered to buy the groceries since I'll be feeding any number of extra people.  Her only stipulation was that she wanted to invite my brothers and their girlfriends to come for the meals from time to time.  In any case, cooking at mom and dad's is how I'll likely be finishing out the new recipe challenge for the year.

Another stunning picture from Jeremy Cowart in Haiti.

A Few More

Earlier I linked to a photo by Jeremy Cowart, taken in Haiti.  If you don't follow him on twitter, you should - even if it's just so you can see these photos from Haiti that he's been shooting and linking to.

Here are three more, incredibly attention catching shots of his:

Rest in Peace...

Where do I go if it rains?

I'm impatient for God to heal my wound so that I can get back to helping others

Stunning Photo - "Love Conquers All"

I just started following photographer Jeremy Cowart on twitter.  He's in Haiti right now.

Check out this picture of a wedding the other day.  The sign the man is holding reads "Love Conquers All".  Cowart's twitter reported that just after taking this photo from their wedding, they drove the couple to their "honeymoon" in a tent city.

The New Recipes Challenge

One of the goals for 2010 that I mentioned at the beginning of the year was that I would cook at least 2 new recipes a month in an effort to expand my repertoire a bit.

So far, I've managed to make three new recipes, and I have photographic proof!

Steak with Spinach Couscous

Hasselbeck Potatoes

Feta Chicken with Zuchini

Olypmic Torch

To be really honest, I knew the Torch relay was passing near where I lived today, and I knew it was going to be happening right around rush hour when I would be driving home, and I was desperately hoping to avoid the whole kit and kaboodle.

Instead, I got totally stuck in traffic.  And not just stuck in traffic.  Basically parked.  About 10 feet from one of the spots where a Torch relay exchange was happening.  Since I had my camera in my purse, I took a few photos.

Waiting for her turn to carry the flame

almost there - see it coming?

the handoff

and she starts running too.
