Permission to Speak Freely by Anne Jackson

When Anne Jackson posted the question, “What is one thing you feel you can’t say in church” on her blog, the results were surprising.  “Permission to Speak Freely” is the result.  An interwoven product of Anne’s own story, and the answers that were submitted to the question she’d posted on her blog, “Permission to Speak Freely” is a beautiful book (both in word, and layout and formatting), honest and bold in it’s call to confession and declaration that the sharing of secrets really can bring safety and freedom.

I’ve struggled for a number of days with what to say in a review of this book.  “Permission to Speak Freely” hit me in ways that I find hard to describe.  Anne Jackson talks about the “gift of going second” and in so many ways this book offered me that chance.  Reading this book was an experience that reminded me of reading Renee Altson’s “Stumbling Toward Faith” a number of years ago.  Both books assured me that I am not alone.  That others, other Christians in fact, struggle with mental illness and addiction and recovering from horrific things supposedly done in the name of Christ.  As a pastor’s kid who has struggled with mental illness, addiction, and wondering whether or not I even wanted to be a part of this thing called “the body of Christ”, I found much to relate to in Jackson’s words.  “Permission to Speak Freely” reminded me that speaking out about the ways Jesus is bringing healing, but also about the very real wrestles of life is a way to offer freedom and healing, not only to others, but to oneself.  I would highly recommend this book, and I'm sure I'll be talking about it further in the days to come.

Daily 5 - Year 2, Day 23

Today's Daily 5:
  1. Cookies for breakfast
  2. Sunshine on my face as I waited for the bus
  3. A visit to Sheep River Falls
  4. A funny, private smile at a moment with a raven at the falls
  5. being all set to take the bus home, and then being offered a ride instead

Monday...

I'm feeling like I don't have a lot to say right now.  Like my internal life is just kind of quiet, and waiting.

I'm looking forwards to an upcoming trip, and back at a number of things that affected my life more profoundly than I ever could have realized.

I'm just sort of paused.

This week is a lot about spending time with visiting family that I only see every five years or so.

It's weird to be with people who are family who feel like strangers.

But we're making it work.  Or at least I am.  They don't feel quite so much like strangers to my parents, I guess.

And with that... I'm off... there are things to be done today.

Daily 5 - Year 2, Day 21

Today's Daily 5:
  1. "Holding" the door for a pair of peacocks at the zoo this morning - they wander the grounds freely, and wanted to leave the building to join two others just outside, but weren't large enough to trip the sensors for the sliding doors, so I "held" the doors open for them as they slowly ambled through.
  2. Watching the hippos eat breakfast - they're kind of like vacuum cleaners, but big, chubby, enormous, scary, and very funny vacuum cleaners that heave themselves into a bath once they're done cleaning.
  3. sitting down on a bench to eat my own breakfast and having the zebras walk over to check me out
  4. the laughter of small children
  5. colobus monkeys and cotton top tamarins, with their tiny serious faces
  6. the majesty of the butterfly garden, and it's warm, damp, sweet smelling air
  7. the face of a little girl, hand over her mouth in delight when she spotted the gelato stall at the farmer's market
  8. spinach and goat feta hummus
  9. the smell of the rain
  10. eating supper with relatives at my favorite Mexican restaurant
