Daily 5 - Year 2, Day 202

Today is one of those days where I can't believe I've made a daily practice of listing at least 5 moments that made me smile, or for which I was thankful, into something that has lasted so long.  One year and two hundred and two days.  It's one of those days where I'm struck by the slow changes this practice has wrought in me.  It's a day where, honestly, I was exhausted and drained, and spent various chunks of time working to fight off random spats of tears.  But it was a day that held beauty, in which I reached often for my phone and jotted items to add to tonight's list.

And so, here's today's Daily 5:
  1. 1 year, 202 days of making these lists
  2. coconut scented body butter, slathered on my legs after a shower.  On a day when I was longing for sun and palm trees, this was sort of a breath of hope.  A scent reminding me of summer.
  3. whole wheat toast with butter and jam
  4. a quiet Sunday morning, home alone
  5. One last chance to spend time with L. before she gets on a plane for other continents, literally completing a trip 'round the world over the last four months.
  6. Shopping with J and L, my former roommates and laughing together, enjoying the comfortable familiarity of those who have lived together and know each other's habits well
  7. I finally purchased a rack for my collection of earrings, and I'm super excited about it.  It's pretty and cute, and I can't wait to get home tomorrow evening, sort through my collection and add them to the rack.  I took before (and will take after) pictures to share.  I wasn't planning to buy anything today, but I've been looking for a way to visibly display my earrings for literally years, and when I came upon this one that was both cute and reasonably priced, J and L, who have been on many a shopping trip with me where I've pondered options, convinced me that I couldn't afford to walk away.  I'm so glad they talked me into it!
  8. catching up on blog reading - google reader has revolutionized my blog reading, and I'm loving that they're all in one place, just waiting for me
  9. watching The Food Network, both on television, and online today.  Absolutely my favorite background for sitting to read, write, or otherwise putter.
  10. Anthropologie - new to Canada, or at least to Calgary, but so pretty, and full of inspiration, even if I will never really afford anything there.  We spent a long time wandering around in there, fingering clothes, sitting in furniture, exclaiming over pretty things and fun ideas, and smelling candles (our favorite was a mango jasmine scented one).  I walked away feeling separated from the greyness of March in Calgary, and inspired to create something beautiful.  Not bad for a free pastime!

Daily 5 - 245

Today's Daily 5:
  1. I think this time I've finally gotten things straightened out with Enmax.  And, after ten months of fighting with them to sort out a billing problem, the supervisor I dealt with was surprisingly helpful and accommodating.
  2. Picked out a great new purse on clearance at my favorite clothing shop tonight, and then got it to the cash register and found out it was ten dollars cheaper than the marked price.
  3. Really enjoyed the butter chicken that I cooked last night when I ate it for lunch today.
  4. Loving Sara Miles' "Jesus Freak" as I'm slowly reading it.
  5. Loving the audio version of "Stuff Christians Like" as I'm listening my way through that as well.
  6. Challenged by my middle brother
  7. Glad to have heard that a friend who was traveling with some potential complications arrived safely at her destination

Daily 5 - Day 234

Today's Daily 5:
  1. 234 days of this.  Mostly because 234 is a fun number to say and to type.
  2. Found simple but pretty boxes on sale at Ikea for storing all my old journals in.  I'd been wanting to take them off of my bookshelves and out of public view, and this seems the perfect solution.
  3. Spent the day mostly with family.
  4. Sharing a smile via e-chat with a very dear friend as she described briefly the special events of her day
  5. Doing errands on my own this morning, with a borrowed car.  Being able to do simple things, alone, and in my own timing is something precious right now.
  6. Bought a few new TV on DVD seasons, looking forward to watching them in the background in coming weeks and months while I work and putter in the evenings
  7. Holy Saturday.  Quiet and waiting and preparing.
  8. filtered water
  9. hints of hope, found in a night that held a few hours of sleep
  10. got a subscription to watch sermons and worship sets online live or archived from a church I'd love to visit someday.

Daily 5 - Day 175

Today's Daily 5:
  1. 175 days of deliberately choosing to seek the things that bring joy in my day.  There's something significant to me in reaching the 175 tonight, on the eve of 4 days of anniversaries that were initially anything but joyful.
  2. Thankful for the dream I had this morning, and the things it is speaking to me tonight as I let it ruminate, and slowly pray and ponder and process it.
  3. Got a phone call from my dad today to let me know that a package had arrived for me at their house.  Because of the lack of a vehicle, I likely won't be able to pick it up and dig into it until the weekend, but it made my day to get a call that I had fun mail waiting for me.
  4. Coffee with a friend tonight - was fun to catch up.  Had a cup of one of my favorite teas, and then satisfied a craving by eating Mexican at a restaurant in Kensington.  (Note:  don't really recommend the restaurant actually, though the flautas I had were decent.  Salt and Pepper is much better and more authentic Mexican food.)
  5. Loved walking in Kensington again tonight.  I haven't been there in months, but there is something about that neighborhood that always stirs me.  Something about the color and creativity, even with all the weird little new age shops with psychics and crystals and all sorts of stuff.  (Can't walk into some of those shops, given my particular sensitivities to the spiritual realm, but I do love to walk in Kensington.)
  6. Went into Eleven:Eleven with my friend.  It's a funky shop that sells clothes and accessories made by a local designer who travels to India and buys used saris and silks, and then brings them back and fashions the fabric into incredible tops and dresses, for relatively decent prices.  One of these days I'm going to manage to be in there when I have money to spend - so many of the clothes suit my current penchant for flowy, slightly hippy, and quite colorful clothing, while still being incredibly beautiful and unique.
  7. Been enjoying watching old seasons of ER on dvd these evenings while I've been resting.
  8. A productive meeting at work this morning that led to a productive afternoon, and a much more workable solution for entertaining a large number of children and their moms at our upcoming conference.
  9. Some good reminders via email from a dear friend.
  10. Some new friends from the house church I've been attending emailed the other day, offering me a ride for tomorrow night.  I was so thankful to be included without having to ask.  We confirmed the ride today.  It really meant quite a lot that they would seek me out and offer to pick me up if I was up to coming.  I'm so grateful to get to be part of that again tomorrow night.  It will be nice to be with people who are becoming friends, and who love Jesus.

Daily 5 - Day 150

After a couple of mentally very messy days, I'm reminded again of the fact that I started making smile lists in the first place because I heard somewhere that making a list of things you're grateful for (in my case things that make me smile) on a regular basis has the same effect on your brain chemistry as a mild dose of anti-depressants.  After some particularly challenging moments in the summer, I decided to make it an official daily habit, and 150 days ago the daily 5 was born out of the desire to simply choose to be more thankful and joyful in the day to day moments of life.  A month or two after that, I realized that it was becoming commonplace to list five things, and that there was tending to be quite a bit of repetition from day to day in my list of five, and I started challenging myself to write 10 (while still calling this experiment the "Daily 5").  These days I write some version of 5 or 10, depending on the day, how tired I am, and how much of a challenge it is to reach whatever number I've chosen.

I need to push myself for 10 again for a few days.  These rough days have had a decided impact on my mental landscape, and I need to shift focus, and deliberately choose again to find the "joyful, make me smile and oh so grateful" moments in my life.

Daily 5 - Day 150!
  1. Some great new jeans - so comfy, and discovering that a store that I'd long thought didn't make jeans in a short length, does.  Love the cut of the new jeans too - GAP, curvy flare.  Kinda like the name of the cut too, for that matter.
  2. Some great new tops to go with the jeans, or to be dressed up quite easily for work.
  3. Being caught off guard by an almost sick feeling at the excess I experienced today while shopping at the new mega mall.  I like that a trip to the mall became a chance for God to really challenge my heart again, and remind me that one of my goals for the year is to purge and simplify, to be less of a consumer.
  4. Time laughing with friends, while shopping
  5. Italian wedding soup from M&M for lunch
  6. Made a great grilled oriental chicken salad for supper.  Kinda cheated by using a salad kit, but I really liked the addition of dried pineapple that came in this kit (which I'd never used before) - it added a nice texture and flavor to the usual noodles, veggies, almonds, and sesame dressing.
  7. still loving the George Foreman grill my parents gave me for my birthday.  Such an easy way to make hamburgers or grilled chicken, without fire being involved, or the need to flip things, and without having to go outside in the middle of winter.
  8. Loved the surprise that an audio book I'd requested at the library, and that I wasn't expecting for another couple of weeks had arrived when I went to the library to pick up some other items that I'd requested that had arrived.  Was great to spend some time this afternoon listening to part of the book while I puttered around.  Liking it quite a bit so far.
  9. Thinking about the friends that are really more like family, and grateful for the way they challenge me, and for their love of me.
  10. Productive, but mostly restful and quiet afternoon, with candles and my oil burner lit in my bedroom
  11. (AND a bonus!)  Making it to 150 straight days of showing up and listing the things that are reasons for joy and hope and thankfulness in my life.  I think it really is making a difference in how I see the world, and I'm so grateful for that.

Thoughts on Consumption

I headed out to a huge new mega mall that was recently built just outside the city with two friends this morning.  I had Christmas money and a government tax cheque to burn, and it turns out that all of the city locations of my favorite store ship their clearance items to the new mega store in the new mega mall.  In the interests of getting the most for money, that was where I went.

I was glad, when I woke up, to have those plans for today.  I've been incredibly unsettled the last few days, and this morning I was tired of the constant wrestling.  I wanted to laugh and be with friends, and forget for a little while.  And that's what I did.

I shopped.  I tried buying happyness.  Not really I guess, but sometimes new things help to shift my mood - mostly I think it's probably that being out with friends helps with that.

I rarely buy in large quantities.  I rarely have large quantities of guilt-free, budget exempt money to do large quantity shopping.  Today I shopped in large quantities, thanks to the gifts from some family members at Christmas, and the convenient arrival of a GST refund cheque last night.

To be honest, while I'm pleased with my purchases (three tops, a bracelet, three pairs of jeans), their versatility (will work for work or play - well except the jeans, and even those will work on Fridays), and the fact that all of them suit me well and really did have that little bit of personal "wow" that is the only thing that will convince me to buy clothes these days, I felt a little sick spending all of that money at once.  I couldn't help thinking what I could have done with that money.  About starving children, and others in need.  It's an odd sort of wrestle - my work wardrobe did need a bit of help, and my jeans were old and ratty and no longer fit properly (thanks to the changes in weight due to health problems the last few years.)  I need to dress to a certain standard of professionalism for work, and the all of the clothes I bought were marked down, and are high quality items that should last quite some time.  I certainly won't be buying clothes again anytime soon, and I've purged and repurged my wardrobe over the last few weeks and months (including a few more items today.)  But despite the fact that I know that my purchases weren't irresponsible, and that I turned down several other deals that I would have found irresistible in the past, I still felt a little sick.

It was some combination of my own spending, and the simply massive size of consumption and selfishness that a mall of that scale represents that made me sick, I think.  It definitely won't be a place I visit regularly, if, for no other reason than it takes a good forty minutes to drive to from my home, and there is a mall that I can walk to within twenty minutes from where I live with most of the same stores, just not big and new and flashy.  (I'm trying not to even think of the environmental impact, and the huge fight over water rights that went on with the building of this mall.)  I rarely react to my own spending, partly because I know I now budget and spend carefully and wisely (and because I'm paying the debt accrued from times of not budgeting and spending carefully and wisely).  I'm as guilty as anyone of being a consumer, and over purchasing (the list of unread books I've purchased is now nearly 150 titles long - a list I hope to pare down this year), but more and more I find myself drawn to simplicity.  Thinking thoughts like "I like that, but I've been existing just fine without it.  I sure don't need it now."  Something about the immense size - a lingerie shop nearly as large as a department store in a regular mall - 6 different "zoned" decorating schemes, that sort of thing just made me cringe.  It made me cringe enough that rather than heading to pick up take out of some sort for my lunch and supper for today (a fairly regular occurrence for me on weekends, and one I look forward to - treating myself to some favorites after a week of cooking), I came home and pulled meat out of the freezer for my supper, and heated up a delicious frozen Italian wedding soup for my lunch.

There was actually one item at the mall that I nearly purchased but didn't.  A jewellry rack of sorts.  I've been hunting for a way to display my multiple dangly earrings so that I can easily find them and wear them more consistently.  I loved this item, but there were a few things I would change about it.  Instead of purchasing, consuming, and making do with something that wasn't quite righ, just for the sake of having it, I took a photo of it with my cell phone, and headed to my parent's house after completing another errand near their home.  Turns out that I rightly guessed that this was something my dad could help me make quite easily with his welding tools.  So, I'll get something more suited to my needs, get to spend time with my dad, and, who knows, maybe I'll even get him to teach me basic welding - that'd be a cool skill to add to my list!

And now, I'm home, I've put my purchases away in my closet (well, except for one pair of jeans, which I put on).  I know I spent wisely, and yet...

I think this is going to be a year of simplifying even further.  Of paring down.  Of evaluating my own consumer habits.  Of a quest to be "greener", healthier, less selfish, and less of a consumer.  Less demanding of instant gratification, and more willing to wait and work for my satisfaction.  It's going to be a unique year.  I'll give it that!

Daily 5 - Day 138

Today's Daily "5":
  1. Sleeping late, and having a slow, lazy morning
  2. picking out a hair straightener (I apparently got rid of my old one the last time we moved, and needed one now that my hair is shorter again) that didn't seem to be on sale and getting to the cashier and discovering it was on sale for a very good price.
  3. massage appointment
  4. bumping into T. at the library (we were at the same branch, independently, and I just happened to run into him there), and chatting for a few minutes
  5. coming home from the library with some interesting potential reads
  6. manicure/pedicure - probably won't return to this particular nail salon, but enjoyed soaking my feet, and having someone else pamper me a bit.
  7. bacon and peas pasta dish for dinner
  8. my own home-made jam drop cookies
  9. chatting with a dear friend for a while tonight
  10. making some progress on my "to do" list for the week, and feeling good about what I've accomplished today.

Pausing

I'm pausing, just for a moment, to catch my breath.

We're on pace for a record number of credit card payments to be put through via the phone today.  Guess who gets to take those calls and record all the information?  Yah.  That would be me.

I was so looking forward to getting my hair cut tonight.  It's been about six months, and I'm desperately in need of some hair help.  I'm still looking forward to it, but my excitement is slightly dulled by the realization this morning that my hairdresser is located in a mall.  I have to go to a mall, and find parking, two days before Christmas.  Gross.

And, I have to resist temptation while doing it.  Because one of my favorite shops - where I buy all my skin care, hair care, and generally self-pampering products - is having a stupidly good sale.  Any 3 items in the store for $30.  Could be three $20/each items.  I could have them all for thirty bucks.  But my budget doesn't have room for this, and when they had this same sale about a month ago (unheard of by the way - clearly there is some recession selling going on), I stocked up on the items I regularly use.  So there's no real need to buy more.  Sigh.  Everything within me rebels at not taking advantage of the sale.

And now, after this brief pause for sanity, I must return to the busyness of the day.

4 hours to go (though one of them is my lunch!).

Then the train home, make dinner, and head out to find parking at the mall.

But after that comes an hour or so of pampering, and I'll walk out of there with really great hair.  That I'm definitely looking forward to.

And then maybe beginning to package up Christmas baking for wrapping and giving.

I'll be back later today, with a daily 5 list, and, if I have time, with a great prayer, fitting for this season, from Walter Bruggemann.  That'll come tomorrow if I don't get to it tonight.

Morning

I'm headed out within the hour.

A little bit of shopping to do in the early(ish) morning hours that the mall has extended it's hours to include for the Christmas season. Basically an attempt to avoid crowds.

And then one more cooking demonstration. Maybe. Not totally sure at this point if I'll go or not.

Then home.

With plans to hibernate in my bedroom.

To read.

To send a few emails.

To journal and think and pray.

To light the Advent wreath, and pause again to reflect.

To long for His coming, and being made new.

Feels like a long week

It feels like it should be Thursday at the very least. It's only Wednesday.

I'm listening to Ingrid Michaelson's "Maybe" on repeat this morning. The refrain, "maybe, in the future..." plays over and over in my thoughts.

I discovered this morning that Jason Upton is doing a conference in a small city only 3 hours drive from here this weekend. I'm far too broke to attend, which is disappointing.

Tonight is grocery shopping night. That means that I'm already praying for a peaceful experience there. (Have I mentioned that while I don't mind grocery shopping, I have a strong dislike for the discount warehouse type store we do most of our grocery shopping at? I refer to it as the "soul-sucking mega store".)

I started my four days of exercise a day earlier than usual this week. (I read a brief study that suggested that one way to increase seretonin in your brain was to do 20 minutes of moderately aerobic - they suggested yoga - exercise for at least four days in row. Apparently if you do this, there was an increase of seretonin levels in the brain shown over a period of sixty days.) Because I started a day early this week, that means tonight is my 4th day, and that I'm actually kind of excited about.

My budgeting strategy is being put to the test tomorrow. One of my favorite shops is having a sale. A good sale. 20% off everything for members instead of 10%. And it's very tempting to go stock up on the products I buy there (which include my skin care products and hair care products). But I bought what I needed, and a bit extra fairly recently, and my budget is already a bit stretched, so I think tomorrow I'm going to quietly ignore the sale. (Which hurts the bargain loving part of me that rarely pays full price for things...)

I'm really looking forward to eating the chicken gumbo I made last night for dinner tonight. It looked pretty tasty, and it's rather nice to know that on a night that will already be busy, there is a full pot sitting in the fridge, just waiting to be heated up and consumed.

I'm still in the midst of odd, deep spaces, and am thus sharing mostly the ephemera of life at the moment. I hope you'll bear with me as I sort through memories and ponder the events of my days (and nights) more quietly.

The dreaming has been thick lately, and has carried memories with it, and I'm feeling the need to process deeply and internally before sharing with the world (or perhaps never sharing with the world.)

It feels like a long week. How is it possible that it's only Wednesday?

Daily 5 - Day 50

50 Days. How crazy is that? At what point do I stop numbering these posts, and just start dating them? I kind of like the numbers, though. They remind me that I've hit milestones of time. That I'm making little steps towards positive changes within myself. They help me feel like something is being achieved in showing up here each day. 50 days seems like a pretty good milestone.

In any case, here's today's daily 5:
  1. Two sets of great deals while at the mall tonight. One at the Body Shop on products I wasn't out of, but use constantly. And one at my favorite clothing store, where, for about $90 of products, I only spent $45, since they gave me a $20 discount just for trying on a coat (that I loved but didn't buy), and since I had a gift card left over from my birthday to cover another portion of the bill. Plus, the two tops, cute sweater, and scarf that I bought will likely all become wardrobe staples for me.
  2. Freshly laundered sheets, pajamas, and towels. I do love that clean, fresh smell.
  3. Having a night off from cooking dinner and eating the great food that L. cooked for us
  4. A quiet free evening with no commitments, and just time spent shopping with L.
  5. That today was slightly (if only slightly) smoother at work than the previous two days this week.

Travel?

Well, if my purchases of the last few days are any indication, I'm slowly starting to dream of travel again.

Some of you will know that I have been hesitant to dream about the trips that have been on my heart, thanks to the many challenges of the last few years.

But last weekend's jaunt to Kelowna underscored a few needs in my travel supplies department, and I've spent some birthday money to accommodate those needs.

I bought this and this today. My current pack is about half the size of the new one, really too small for more than an overnight trip. My current day pack is about half the size of the new one, and too small for trips when I need more than a very small waterbottle and a book or two. This one will accommodate river trips and such when I also need to pack a towel, and bathing suit or so forth.

In the last few days I also bought a few other travel related items. Things that will make it easier for me, whether I'm traveling overnight, or for longer periods of time.

Apparently traveling is becoming a possibility in my head again. Hmm... that's going to require some pondering....

Tuesday Evening

I think I only slept about three hours last night. And I dreamt a lot in those three hours.

After work tonight, I ran errands. Picking up a book. A Father's Day gift and a birthday gift for my dad. Some quiet browsing in Ikea, looking for a new bed frame. (I've sold my current bed frame, and will be purchasing something new after we move.)

When I finally got home, I popped dinner in the oven, and headed for the shower, upon completion of which, I decided it was time to be wearing pajamas. The comfy new pajamas I bought recently.

I'm planning to be in bed early tonight. Hopefully with the plan to sleep many more hours and much more restfully than last night.

In the meantime, a little bit of M*A*S*H*, and a little bit of reading, and a little bit of writing.

I Should Have Known Better...

I should have known better.

I was in a fantastic mood. I'd gotten up slowly, visited the zoo, the farmer's market, and a great bakery before coming home to have breakfast.

There is a grocery store that I particularly hate. Unfortunately it has the best deals in town, so we shop there regularly. As stores go, it's huge and warehouse like. The floors are rarely clean, and it's even more rare that we don't have to go to another shop afterwards, because this store, despite it's good prices, rarely has everything we need (including staples like milk!) in stock. And, they're chronically short-staffed.

I'm sensitive to places, and this store is life-sucking. But, it saves us significant amounts of money, so we continue to shop there.

But, with all of that, I should have known better than to go grocery shopping there on a day I was in a good mood, and was supposed to be resting.

It was a bad move on my part. Within moments of stepping in the door, my mood had plummeted into crankiness.

Anyway... obviously I still need some work on the whole managing my energy and sabbath thing.

Here's to doing a better job of that next weekend.

Book Fiend

I have this weakness for buying books.

After I drove my parents to the airport tonight, I made a quick stop at a local bookstore, to purchase what was supposed to be one book, that I'd called ahead and put on hold.

I walked out of the store with seven books. And one more on order, that will likely arrive tomorrow, necessitating a return trip this weekend.

What makes this funny is that for the last six months, for the first time since I learned to read, I've had absolutely no interest in reading. And especially in reading books. Short articles, newspapers, magazines, blogs - all of these have held my interest, but very little book reading has actually been done (as the sidebar on the blog demonstrates!)

But, this last week or so, I've felt the stirring of interest in reading again. I've been making my way through a biography that's both very enjoyable and deeply challenging.

And, I'm excited to dive into several of the titles I purchased tonight.

So, perhaps this will be a weekend for reading. For finding a spot in the sun in the living room, or curling up in the grass in "my" park with a book.

Reading. And maybe journaling. Because, for me, they tend to go hand in hand. And I'd like to get back to journaling as well.

Friday Smile List

Well, it's Friday again, and we all know that I like Fridays. However, sometimes they start out really great, and by the time I make it home in the evening, I'm starting to feel lonely, crabby and exhausted. So, I thought I'd start the process of gratitude and choosing joy nice and early today, and share a few things that are making me smile.
  • Jeans at work
  • a mug of passion tea, a leftover donut, and a tin of canned peaches for breakfast
  • sunshine outside my window
  • a great quote for the day (see my earlier post) on the calendar that was a gift from a friend
  • the memory of a greeting card I purchased recently. (I'm sure one of you will get it in the mail from me.) The front has a picture of some trees and a large grey "hill" and reads "Everyone should believe in something bigger than themselves." You open it and discover that the "hill" is a part of an elephant, and read "I believe in elephants." This is my rather twisted and deadpan sense of humor. When I saw this one, I had to purchase it.
  • the large raven that just flew by my window
  • the fact that I have an office window
  • hemp lip balm from the body shop
  • the audio book I'm currently listening to as I drive to and from work
  • a very cute and comfy hoody
  • the prospect of a long weekend
  • plans to do a bit of shopping after work, and then head home and engage in my favorite decadent pasttime by hanging out in a nice hot bubble bath with a mineral mask on my face, watching last night's season finale of Grey's Anatomy on the internet
  • owning an ipod, which lets me listen to such a wide variety of things while I'm driving to and from work
  • a fun conversation this morning with a coworker
  • plans to go for a nice long drive and listen to a much more heavy audiobook tomorrow while enjoying the scenery of the mountains and foothills.
  • the fact that I was actually sort of hungry to eat breakfast this morning
  • the memory of a prayer a friend emailed to me the other night, where she asked God to arrange for me to get some hugs this week - I have gotten a few - a few really heartfelt ones, and one really awkward one, but I'll take them any way they come!

And with that, I'm off to start what promises to be a very full day!

Tuesday - Little Things

It's the little things, you know?

The little things that I'm thinking about tonight.

About how, a few weeks ago, I heard Jesus speak love to me through the voice of my dad. I was showing my parents a lovely new coat I'd purchased, that I was very excited about. I'd bought it because, when I looked at it in the mirror, I felt elegant. A particular word and description were stored in my mind, a secret feeling of beauty. No one could have known that word. I hadn't told anyone. And yet, as my dad complimented the coat, he used that word to describe it. And I heard in his voice, the whisper of Jesus saying "you really are beautiful."

About a moment last night, when the voice of another friend confirmed something I thought I'd heard Jesus say. I was purchasing a gift for a friend, wondering if she'd like it, but a particular word was associated with it immediately when I saw the item in the store, and that word meant something, so I went ahead and purchased the item. Later in the evening, I was showing my roommate and her fiancee the item. Her fiancee immediately used the word I'd "heard" when I'd first seen the item to describe it. It made me smile to hear God's whisper to me, his encouragement to pray, in the words of another.

I'm thinking about less serious little things too.

About taking control, and being proactive in the attempt to see some changes in my life.

About eating peanut M & M's. I feel that they must be eaten in a specific color order, though this order varies based on my mood. You always eat the ugliest or most boring color first, and the prettiest color last. Blue is always the prettiest color, with red the second prettiest. The order varies from there depending on my mood.

I haven't watched the innauguration address yet - I guess that's more of a big thing. But I'm planning to do that shortly here.

I have, however, in the last few days, enjoyed two older movies that always make me smile. The American President, and Sabrina (the version with Harrison Ford.)

It was nice to eat a properly home-cooked meal tonight. I made baked chicken breasts, and roasted baby potatoes, and peas.

Little things like sales on items that are a bit of a luxury, but are justifiable on sale.

Little things like three pure white candles, that smell like spring, lit most evenings on my dresser, near where I sit to read and write and think and rest and pray.

And little things like Anne Lamott's "bird by bird" story. I'm reading her book of that title right now, and I love the story that gives it the title - you should pick the book up and read it.

I told a friend the other night that that's my current motto. That for a while, I'm just going to take life "bird by bird".

Tonight I'm glad for the little things.

Fun Evening

I hung out with my newly engaged best friend tonight.

We laughed and talked and shopped together.

(I bought some very fun things...)

I admired her ring, and enjoyed her description of their "1 year anniversary date" and proposal last week.

Next summer I'll be traveling to the Okanagan for a wedding!

I needed an evening to do girly stuff. To laugh and just enjoy each other's company. Nothing serious. Nothing related to the ongoing things I've been working through.

Just smoothies and shopping. Laughing and talking about future plans.

So thankful for that.

Dilemmas

I have two dilemmas tonight.

The first involves buying glasses. I went out tonight to look at my options. Do I buy slightly more funky and colorful, or slightly less funky and neutral? Keep in mind that I only buy new glasses about once every five years, and that I wear my glasses all the time (first thing I put on in the morning, last thing I take off at night.)

The second involves Sunday school tomorrow morning. I'm teaching. My class has three sixteen year old girls. The lesson from the book that I'm scheduled to teach is a presentation of the salvation message. The book is designed for large youth groups, with a mixture of Christian and non-Christian kids. I have three girls, all of whom I've known since they were born, all of whom are dedicated followers of Christ. Not really sure what I'm going to do about that.

Thoughts?

Bright Red Shoes and Other Smiles

It’s funny how a person’s outlook can be affected by colors.

When I used to work for the Bay, and had to wear their black and white color scheme day after day, I’d take great pleasure in coming home and changing into something colorful. Or, I’d punch up the uniformity of the black and white by tying a brightly scarf in my hear, wearing wild earrings, or a brightly colored tank top under my white blouse.

I’m wearing a rather boring, professional, black and white outfit today. One I like, but one that lacks artistic inspiration. However, I’m also wearing a brand new pair of bright red shoes today. I found them on sale yesterday, and they called my name. I’ve been hunting for an affordable pair of red shoes for months now – have almost bought some several times, but have run into snags with sizing (or lack thereof).

Yes, they were a luxury item, not a necessity, but I found mine for $20 yesterday, and jumped at the chance to purchase them. They have pointy toes, and kitten heels, and are generally bright and cheerful. Every time I glance down at my feet, I see the bright red and smile.

I’m needing things that make me smile today, as I’m tired and still struggling with an ongoing decision making process. I’ve arbitrarily set a mid-week deadline on this one – I can’t handle the over-thinking, thought process much longer than that.

So, just to remind myself, here are a few other things making me smile today…

Bright red shoes.

Wildly curly hair – kind of lion’s mane like, and going everywhere.

Finally warming up after the cold commute to work.

Two cups of tea (one passion tea, one rooibos).

An email from a friend this morning.

Lunch plans with two separate friends this week. Dinner plans with a third, and possibly fourth friend.

Plans to see a movie with my brother this coming weekend.

Sleeping through most of the night last night.

Plans to take the bus home from work tonight and enjoy reading (the book on Africa I started a week ago, and a novel) for an hour and a half.
