My Person(s)

This scene from one of the first season's of Grey's Anatomy is sort of a classic:

"You're my person." It's that moment when the friendship was cemented into family.  Into the sort of thing where this is the person with whom you are most yourself.

Recently, as I was fumbling for words to describe a friendship to someone else, she, hearing my description, summed it up, "She's your person."  I had to laugh at this blatant reference to what she didn't even know was my favorite television show.  It was the perfect summation.

I have two persons.  Two people with whom I feel totally free to simply be.  The ones I know I can trust and lean on in the hard times, and the ones who I know will be the first to celebrate with me when the great times come.  They're the ones I email or text when I've had a great steak dinner, or come across something random that made me think of a moment we shared.  They're the ones I email with prayer requests, or funny quotes, or anything in between.  We talk about television shows, our families, about life and faith and travel and books.  And, since neither one lives in the same country as me (and one not even usually on the same continent as me), they're the ones I hang out with via Skype and phone calls.

Except today.  Today I am spending the day in the mountains with one of my people.  She's in town for a brief visit, and I commandeered her for an entire day.  We have some fabulous plans that I'll share later on in the day or maybe tomorrow.  Basically we're just going to enjoy spending an entire day in each others company.

In this case, since it is the person who is generally on a different continent, half-way around the world, I'm keenly aware that it will likely be several years before we get to see each other in person again, so my plan is simply to savor the moments.  To make some really fabulous memories doing a few new things, and some we've done often.  To take photos and laugh.  To talk about the important stuff that just hasn't quite fit into our phone calls or skype dates.  To just be.

I'm so incredibly thankful for this chance to escape Calgary and spend some in person time with "my person".  And I can't wait to see what sorts of fun adventures and blessings our time together will hold!

Daily 5 - Year 2, Day 198

Today's Daily 5:
  1. Getting my email inbox (however briefly!) down to 0 unread message
  2. managing to move a usually very hard to reschedule appointment with great ease
  3. fighting back (and knowing others were praying) in the moments when fear threatened to overwhelm me today
  4. studying for midterms while taking a bubble bath
  5. getting a couple of necessary and nagging errands accomplished
  6. a great yoga class, and laughing and chatting before/after class with the girl on the mat next to mine
  7. subway for supper
  8. the comfy bed I sleep in when I stay at mom and dad's
  9. clean drinking water
  10. M & M cookies

New Month

It's March.  The second day of March.  How did it already get to be March?

I've been home from my vacation for several days, and I find I'm struggling to find words for this space, beyond the nightly Daily 5 posts.

That happens almost every time I go away.

I come back and find that silence has spread from an imposition of timing to a general silence of thoughts made for public space.

It seems that creating space for silence somehow imposes it more broadly.

And, honestly, this week is busy, and creating the time to write this week has been a bit challenging too.

It's a full, full week that is kicking off this new month.

A week with appointments, a couple of midterm exams, and a whole day scheduled out of town with a very dear friend who is rarely on the same continent as me.

Once I hit the weekend, I'm committed to getting back into the swing of blogging.  To getting some posts written and scheduled to go live.

Until then, though, it'll probably still be quiet around here (unless, of course, inspiration strikes!)

Daily 5 - Year 2, Day 197

Today's Daily 5:
  1. Finding out that a rather problematic scheduling issue with one of my final exams would be fairly easily resolved, AND dealing with a very pleasant woman on the phone who promised to ensure that it is resolved.
  2. Lazy Tuesday mornings
  3. Mom made me a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch when I was in a big hurry while at their house briefly this morning, and was wondering out loud what on earth I'd eat since I didn't have time to throw something together.  I love grilled cheese.  I love that my mom knows that, and suggested it, and then offered to make it when I said it sounded good, but I didn't have time.  It was SO tasty.
  4. spending an hour with L. this afternoon.  Seriously can't say enough about how great it is to have her in the same city as me for a few days.
  5. I came home tonight and glanced up at my smile wall, and well, smile.  I love this wall with a map of the world and great quotes and photos of the people I love pinned to it.
  6. I hung palm trees that arrived in the mail yesterday on the wall beside my bed tonight.  There are two little palm beaches there, in my line of vision.  Essential on days like today when the weather, with the windchill was sitting around a warm and cozy -35 C (That's -31 F for you Americans)
  7. got a few things marked off my to do list for the week
  8. still loving my iphone.  I particularly like using Google Reader on it for catching up on blog reading while on the bus
  9. sliding my feet into my new slippers from New Zealand was like a little bit of heaven when I got home tonight and my toes were frozen.
  10. trading emails and facebook comments tonight with friends

Most Read Posts February 2011

It's a new month.  More on that later or in the days to come.  In the meantime, here are the most read posts on my blog for the month of February.

Shifting Perspective - This post is one of my favorites that I've written recently.  I talk about the moment in which I truly noticed a shift in my inner dialogue, beginning to recognize the fruit of all the time I've spent making Daily 5 lists over the last year and a half.

Coming Into Herself - Reflecting again on Grey's Anatomy and how God has so often spoken to me through a show that most write off as a trashy prime-time soap opera.

Resting - A placeholder, declaring quiet, while I headed off for a week's vacation.

Mini Reviews (Part 3) - Reviewing two different books.  One not so recommended, and one that profoundly shaped my thoughts and life over the last six months.

Facebook Status Updates that Will Never Make It - the post that will not go away, and still garners regular search results, written after a particularly trying day during the time period where I was still employed by the job that my roommates fondly referred to as "The Soap Opera", asking for updates on the latest drama each night when I arrived home.

The Age of the Personal - a brilliant excerpt from Robert Benson's book "In Constant Prayer"

Discerning Voices - February was the month for talking about the voices and influences on my life, about what and who was shaping my thinking, and this post reflects that in its discussion of discerning which voices are helpful and which are harmful.

I am Learning - One of those rare posts where the words simply flowed, pecked out letter by letter on my iPhone as I waited at a bus stop.  Again, the shifting perspective that showed up in February.

Comfort Zone - a moment of lightness, courtesy of The Big Bang Theory

Homeward Bound - the end of my time away, sitting in an airport, with plans to come home and steal one last weekend of rest.
