Is nepotism some sort of really uncommon word? Because it's a word I've heard fairly commonly used, but at least twice (and I think a few more times than that) this week I've used the word to describe a situation I'm aware of, and the person or people I was talking with looked at me blankly and asked "what's that?"
Seriously, is this not a commonly known word?

Considering one of the interactions I had in a store when I was leaving for North Africa two years ago, I'm not overly surprised. Unfortunately. LOL. But no, I don't think it's uncommon! A and D could use it properly...even if D was tongue-tied about angus-t the other day. Ha ha.
hmm... the interactions in the store sounds like it might have a story behind it :)
okay. I feel better that I'm not the only person on the planet who knows how to use this word!

"Is Africa really what it looks when you see it on TV?" the store clerk queried.
"Well, what specifically are you referring to about it?" Trailing off while expecting an answer of one of the many typical stereotypes ~ starving children with distended stomachs, vast savannahs with herds of roaming wildlife, or maybe even crowded poverty-stricken cities.
"Well, you know," she continued, "all those huge forests and pine trees, with only a few animals and nowhere people even live. I mean, no one actually lives in Africa, do they?"
"Hmm, that's not exactly what Africa is like."
There was stunned silence for a few moments while she tried to regroup and reconcile the answer with the images in her mind.
"So you're saying people do live there?"
Heading shaking slowly, "Mmmm...Yeah. A few do."

it really is scary how completely unaware people can be at times!
