"If..." Take 6

"If you were to recommend only one book to a friend to help them find spirituality, which would it be?"
(from "If...Questions for the Soul" by Evelyn McFarlane & James Saywell)

Now that is a question that is hard to answer, mostly because the book would vary greatly, depending on the person.

That said, the book that came immediately to mind is Lauren Winner's "Girl Meets God."  Winner talks about her own journey of faith, from a relatively secular home, through Judaism, and into Christianity.  I loved her story, and recommend it highly.  Mostly I loved that she showcased the questions, the challenges, and the journey, not just the answers and destinations.

What about all of you? What book would you recommend?

I would have to say the gospel of John in the Bible, because it is so candid about Jesus' love for us. On the other hand, I would have to say anything by C.S. Lewis.

ooo... Good choices both, Merissa!

Though I have to say - I'm impressed by anyone who can read C.S. Lewis' non-fiction. I have almost never made it through even a chapter (other than Screwtape Letters) of his non-fiction. I am a HUGE fan of the Chronicles of Narian though :)

i quite enjoyed New Kind of Christianity by Brian McLaren, so much so that i was sure to attend a conference with him this past spring. in the conference he laid out his new book Naked Spirituality and he made me cry, and moan and grow through the ordeal.

Ian - I quite liked A New Kind of Christian, but haven't read A New Kind of Christianity or Naked Spirituality. If they evoke those kind of responses, I'll definitely have to add them to my list of books to read in future.
