Friday Reflections, February 3, 2012

On Monday, the email below was the daily reflection in the email of the Daily Texts from the Moravian church.  I found it timely as I've been praying this week for several who are ill, and noting a huge prevalence of cancer around me at the present.  And so today, I reflect with the Moravians on a God who heals.

O Lord, restore me to health and make me live. Isaiah 38:16

She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, "If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well." He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well."
Mark 5:27-28,34

God of wellness, we know fear when disease strikes us hard. We seek cures from doctors and pray for healing. Most of all, we lay our lives in your hands. Make us whole in spirit and touch our bodies. Amen.

Daily 5 - Year 3, Day 166

Today's Daily 5:

  1. Jenn Johnson's song "Come to Me" which has been playing constantly through my head and heart this week, even sometimes waking me as I sleep
  2. Long distance encouragement
  3. seeing the sunrise
  4. Carving out a circle of quiet on a noisy bus
  5. a view of the mountains
  6. a day that started a bit late, and ended a bit early
  7. a friend who is consistently willing to feed me on Thursday evenings
  8. playing with M. - tickling, chasing, laughing, naming and identifying body parts
  9. The sound of M's giggle
  10. reflecting in new ways on the Last Supper as we studied it together tonight at house church

Make Me Laugh?

Y'all, I had great intentions of writing a nice, long, reflective style essay in this space today.  It was tentatively titled "Feminism, Nursing, and Jesus" and I was excited to pour it out.  (I still will, by the way.) But, life happened.  A day that normally ends at 4:00 pm ended instead at 6:15 pm, and was followed by my usual lengthy bus commute.  It was 8:00 pm by the time I made it home and settled in, and I still hadn't prepared to teach at home church tonight.  Exhaustion was rampant, and the brain cells needed for reflective essay writing were long since killed off for the day!

So, feminism, nursing and Jesus will have to wait, and instead of a long essay I'm stopping in to say hi, and asking you to share something in the comments that has made you laugh over the course of the last week.  Anything really.  I'd love to laugh with you today!

Daily 5 - Year 3, Day 165

Today is one of those days where I'm immensely glad that I began counting smiles early in the day.  As the day wore on, it became long, frustrating, and exhausting.  That said, it was the sort of day that reinforces the benefit of recognizing those things in the day for which I'm thankful, or the things that brought me joy, even if they existed amidst some things that frustrated, angered, exhausted, or generally made me batty!

So, today's Daily 5:

  1. a warm bus
  2. a Lectio Divina exercise
  3. An hour set aside for quiet with Jesus as I rode the bus today
  4. pondering and playing with words for later writing
  5. the feeling of hunger (one I didn't experience for years thanks to the havoc of mental health/stress issues on my physical body)
  6. grace from an exam invigilator
  7. passing an important examination (I'm now good to go to give immunizations!)
  8. a good study partner and a comfy place to sit and study
  9. promising myself ice cream as a reward for survival of a very long day
  10. encouraging friends
  11. watching the three daily clips available on Jerry Seinfeld's homepage, and having a reason to laugh
  12. finishing everything I needed before 11pm, even despite my extended school day and late arrival home
  13. a bit of chocolate
  14. some good news on the dedication to making healthier choices front
  15. knowing that tomorrow I can sleep an hour and a half longer than normal, thanks to a slightly later start than usual
